Lagos
Lagos, a picturesque town on the Algarve’s southern coast, has a long and rich history that dates back to Roman times. Known as Lacobriga in antiquity, it was an important port for the Romans, who left behind traces of their civilization, including the remnants of a Roman bathhouse and other archaeological sites.
In the 15th century, Lagos became a pivotal center during the Age of Discovery. It was here that Prince Henry the Navigator established his maritime fleet, and the town served as the departure point for many of Portugal’s famous explorers. Vasco da Gama, whose voyages to India are legendary, is believed to have sailed from Lagos to embark on his historic journey.
Lagos' significance continued throughout the centuries, with the town suffering various invasions, including from the Moors in the 8th century and the English during the Napoleonic Wars. The historic center of Lagos still retains many remnants of its turbulent past, including ancient city walls and forts.
Today, Lagos is a thriving, charming town that combines its rich maritime heritage with modern tourism, attracting visitors for its blend of history, culture, and stunning natural beauty.
