Silves

Silves, one of the oldest towns in the Algarve, boasts a rich and diverse history. Originally inhabited by the Phoenicians and later by the Romans, the town was known as Civitas during Roman rule and was an important administrative and trade center. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Silves became part of the Islamic caliphate in the 8th century and thrived under Moorish rule. It became the capital of the Algarve and was fortified with impressive walls and a grand castle, making it a key strategic and cultural hub during the medieval period.

In 1249, the town was reconquered by King Afonso III of Portugal, marking the end of Muslim rule in the region. The Christian reconquest led to the construction of the Silves Cathedral, which still stands today. Over the centuries, Silves continued as an agricultural center, particularly known for its citrus production and cork industry. The town’s prominence faded somewhat with time, but its medieval heritage remains a key feature of its identity.

Today, Silves is a charming town that blends history with rural beauty, offering visitors a glimpse into its past through well-preserved monuments and an inviting atmosphere.
