Loulé

Loulé, located in the central Algarve, has a rich and diverse history that stretches back thousands of years. The area was first inhabited by the Phoenicians, and later by the Romans, who left behind traces of their civilization, including ruins and the remains of a Roman bridge. During the Moorish period (8th–13th centuries), Loulé flourished as an important market town and fortified settlement. The Moors built impressive walls and fortifications, many of which are still visible today in the town’s historic center.

In 1249, the town was captured by Portuguese forces during the Christian Reconquista, and Loulé became part of the Kingdom of Portugal. The town’s significance grew as a center for agriculture, particularly for the cultivation of cereals, citrus fruits, and cork. Over time, Loulé became known for its traditional markets and bustling trade.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Loulé saw significant development, with the expansion of infrastructure and urbanization. Today, it is a vibrant town that blends its rich cultural heritage with modern influences, and is known for its picturesque streets, traditional markets, and charming historic center.
